End of Season Get Together 2010 Event Report
Our
third and final event of the year started on a beautiful morning
and although the sun disappeared the rain held off and so we were
grateful for small mercies.
The "stars"
of this event were all pre 1980 and pre 1980 style vehicles. We
hoped to attract a good assortment of different vehicles and we
did. We saw the return of cars from our previous shows including
Dave Hunt's 1963 Thunderbird and Bob Howe's 1930's style, home built
Sherpley to name but two. Newbies included a rare 4 door ex police
Cortina Lotus, a couple of Morris Marinas and a beautiful classic
two-tone green 1938 MG TA midget. We had a great mix of traditional
classic cars, Hot Rods, Americans and so much more. You can find
professional pictures of the morning arrivals on www.clevercaptures.com/Cars/Clapham-Classic-Events/
plus our gallery
has some super photos by Russ Filer and a few of our own.
Oakley Motorcycle
Club did us proud with a great turnout from their club of both classic
and modern bikes. They were joined by other motorbikes and scooters
making a fantastic display of around 80 bikes in all.
As always the
museums both surprised and pleased our visitors with the vast array
of memorabilia, photos and documents from the war operation and
the "Home Front". This time there was the added bonus
of the wartime clothing display which the Sylvester-King family
kindly held over from the Glenn Miller Festival for our guests to
enjoy. Most people found time to visit at least one of the seven
museums housed in the airfield buildings but with so much to see
there's plenty left for future exploration.
The afternoon's
relaxation was temporarily disturbed by a "mini cackle fest".
Santa Pod racers, Oogie Barrett, Kim Bishop, Debra Laugher and Paul
Brown in their P100, 41 Willis, 76 Camaro and dragster respectively,
simultaneously fired up their engines and were well received by
the crowd. They were joined by 9 year old Louis Davies on his junior
drag bike. Louis is in the middle of his first season racing at
Shakespeare County Raceway. His best competition time so far is
13.01 seconds at 47mph over the eighth mile!
The day was
rounded up nicely with smiles from the winners of the colouring
competition, the family quiz, the raffle prizes which were kindly
donated by our sponsors and the biggest smile of all came from the
man who won the free prize draw for pre 1980 vehicles and went home
£300 richer than when he arrived!
We had some
great feedback from lots of people including:-
"What a brilliant venue! I only live 20 miles away but didn't
even know this was there. Didn't go in my Anglia Coz the Twinks
blew a piston (' ') so I had to 'plod' there in a Lotus Cortina,
(' ') . . . it wouldn't have mattered if I'd gone on a uni-cycle
tho', well it might because I would have fell off, but there's so
much to see, . . a must if you like your history & it will definitely
be on my list for another visit. Cheers, Ozzy."
We'd like to
take this opportunity to thank our family and friends who volunteered
to help us at all three events as well as everyone who attended
for giving us support and encouragement and making all the hard
work worthwhile. After a short break, we'll be arranging next year's
events and posting them on our web site. Watch this space!
